The voice who responds when you call out “Alexa” and then ask it a question, or to order food or play your favourite song for example. An Amazon Echo is the speaker that the Alexa software resides on, and is your audio interface with it. To work, the speaker needs an active internet connection.

When you want to use your Echo speaker, by asking for info or telling it to do something, you generally start by calling out “Alexa,” the “wake” word or name for the Amazon Assistant, and then ask your question or give your command. In 2021, the speakers come in a range of sizes and styles which are often developing such as the Dot, Echo Studio, or Show which offers a screen and other third party options as well.

There is also a companion app available on the iOS store and Google Play Store that you as a user can use to install and setup new skills and link with other devices. Amazon continually improves their virtual assistant with more features and skills so they offer a great option for voice controlled home automation.
